The History of Valentine’s Day
Legend has it Valentine’s Day began with a romantic and very famous saint. During the 3rd century AD in Rome, Emperor Claudius had banned marriages from taking place because he thought married men created inferior soldiers. Valentine, a local priest thought this ruling was unfair so he arranged marriages to take place in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. It was during his time in jail that he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and sent her a love letter on the day of his death (14th February) signed ‘from your Valentine’.
It was in the 1500s that Valentine’s Day started gaining popularity and by the 1700s, people had started sending each other printed Valentine’s Day cards.
